At least 50 killed in DRC train derailment

Kinshasa, Sep 12 (UNI) At least 50 people were killed and several others injured when a train derailed in Democratic Republic of Congo's southeastern province of Tanganyika in the early hours of Thursday, the minister of humanitarian affairs said.
"Another disaster! Derailing at 3 am (0100 GMT) in Tanganyika (province) near Mayibaridi. Provisional toll: 50 dead and several injured," Minister for Humanitarian Affairs Steve Mbikayi said in a tweet.
According to Xinhua news agency, Mr Mbikayi expressed condolences to the families and announced that the government was holding a meeting to discuss measures to deal with the incident.
Rail network of DRC dates back to the colonial era (1960) and has had little maintenance and poor record for safety.
In March, a freight train derailed in Kasai province, claiming lives of 32 people and wounding 91 others.
