Amanatullah's massive lead in Okhla : Rejection of BJP's campaign against Shaheen Bhagh?

Amanatullah's massive lead in Okhla : Rejection of BJP's campaign against Shaheen Bhagh?

New Delhi, Feb 11 (UNI) The sitting Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan from Okhla constituency, which houses Shaheen Bagh -- the hotbed of anti-CAA protests---registered a whooping victory over the BJP candidate by more than 71, 664 votes.

The mandate can been seen as the rejection of BJP's campaign against Shaheen Bagh protestors.

The protests against the newly amended citizenship law became a voice for all political parties in Delhi's election campaign with Aam Aadmi Party and Indian National Congress supporting it while Bhartiya Janata Party opposing.

During the campaign, the Shaheen Bagh area also became a receiving end of violence. Three incidents of shooting were reported from the area.

Aam Aadmi Party initially maintained a distance from the protests but later, in the final leg of the campaign, the ruling party extended their support.

West Delhi BJP MP Parvesh Verma called Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal a terrorist while speaking to media. Subsequently, Verma was removed from the BJP's star campaigners list by the Election Commission and also barred for 96 hours from campaigning.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in an election rally at West Delhi's Najafgarh, asked the voter to press the lotus button on EVM so that the 'current' could be felt at the stir-hit Shaheen Bagh.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in a rally alleged that opposition is feeding 'Biryani' to the protestors.

Supreme Court also came into the picture as it issued a notice to the Centre and Delhi government on the petitions seeking clearance of Shaheen Bagh-Kalindi Kunj road where anti-CAA protests have been going on for over 55 days.

"Protests can carry on, but it should be done in an area which is designated for protests. You cannot create inconvenience for the people," Apex Court observed.
