Alstom becomes first company to achieve full certification for latest digital train control standard

Kolkata, Oct 29 (UNI) Reaffirming its leading position in digital rail technologies, Alstom
has become the first company in the world to be fully certified for the latest onboard and
trackside ETCS standards.
The certifications were issued by the independent railway certification and testing
organisation Belgorail. The newest software evolution ensures interoperability with
Baseline 3 Maintenance Release 2 for the complete railway system.
“We are proud to have yet again set a new standard in rail. We are on track to gradually
replacing all the existing incompatible systems throughout Europe and optimising and
boosting the international freight and passenger transport,” said Jean Francois-Beaudoin,
SVP Alstom Digital Mobility.
“With this certification, we are looking forward to offering our advanced technologies to
India and supporting in revamping of the mainline railway landscape”, added Thameem
Kamaldeen, Managing Director – Alstom Digital Mobility, India & South Asia.
ETCS is the signalling and control component of the European Rail Traffic Management
System (ERTMS) which provides a system of standards for train signalling management.
It is arguably the most efficient train control system in the world, bringing significant
advantages in terms of maintenance cost savings, safety, reliability, punctuality and traffic
capacity.
It is a replacement for the legacy train protection systems and is designed to replace the
many incompatible safety systems currently in operation. This explains why ETCS is
increasingly successful outside Europe and is becoming the train control system of choice
for countries such as India, Australia, Taiwan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia.
The first projects include application of the new standards on a conventional line in
Monza-Chiasso, Italy, with revenue service planned for summer 2021, and the very
high-speed line Paris-Lyon, France, with revenue service planned for 2024.
Alstom is a major supplier of onboard and trackside ETCS equipment via its ATLAS
solution, representing 70% of the world’s onboard rail systems in service and 18,000
kilometres of tracks worldwide. In total, Alstom has been contracted to equip 9000
trains with Atlas onboard solutions, of which 1,100 vehicles will be equipped with the
Baseline 3 Release 2 solution.
Today, across 30 countries, Alstom has provided significant performance improvement
for all ETCS standards, including the very first application of ETCS Level 3 in Germany.
As an energy efficient solution, ATLAS is designed to be scalable to meet customer
needs across various levels. In the latest versions of ATLAS, Alstom introduces virtual
and adaptive blocks, prioritising reduction in infrastructural needs and costs. Atlas also
comes with Automatic Train Operations (ATO) systems that ensures interoperability.
Alstom sees huge potential for the technology in the Indian market. Indian Railways
has already announced that it is planning to install ETCS Level 2 on four lines across
the North, East, South & West zones, as a pilot project to reduce congestion on the
railway network and increase line capacity, thereby improving punctuality and increasing
the average speed of the train while ensuring safety.
National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has also decided to equip
India’s first RRTS corridor (Delhi-Meerut) with ETCS Level 2 signalling system.
