Madurai, Tamil Nadu Nov 18 (UNI) Tamil Nadu is all set to hold assembly election to Thanjavur and Aravakurichi constituencies and a by-election to Thirupparankundram constituency tomorrow in the absence of blistering campaign by Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary Ms.J.Jayalalithaa and her political bête noire DMK President M.Karunanidhi. The State went to Assembly poll on May 16 last when AIADMK returned to power for a second consecutive term. However, the poll to Thanjavur and Aravakkurichi constituencies were postponed from May 16 to May 23 by the Election Commission following large-scale complaints of allurement of voters and electoral malpractices in both constituencies. The EC had on May 21 decided to once again postpone the poll to June 13 on similar reasons. The EC had later rescinded the notification to Thanjavur and Aravakkurichi constituencies on May 28, the first in the electoral history of the country, following evidence of use of money to influence voters. The by-election to Thirupparankundram constituency in Madurai district was necessitated following the demise of AIADMK MLA S.M.Seenivel. Unlike the previous elections, the campaign to three constituencies lacked the usual acrimony mainly because Ms.Jayalalithaa being hospitalised, while her arch rival Mr.Karunanidhi was too unwell. The demonetization also has impact on election campaign. However, all the three constituencies were set for a showdown between the two major Dravidian parties- the ruling AIADMK and the opposition DMK. MORE UNI GSM CS 1015
