Cairo, Aug 10 (UNI) Egyptian authorities on Monday further extended the incarceration of Al Jazeera journalist Mahmoud Hussein by another 45 days.
Hussein an Egyptian national, has been in prison since December 2016, when he landed in the country on a private visit, has now spend more than 1300 days in prison.
Hussein has been accused of "incitement against state institutions and broadcasting false news with the aim of spreading chaos", allegations which both he and the Al Jazeera Media Network have denied.
The Doha-based network has been carrying out a worldwide campaign calling for Hussein to be released.
Last year in May, an Egyptian court rejected an order by the state prosecutor to release him and instead opened a new investigation against him with unspecified charges and put him back to prison.
His incarceration is already in breach of Egypt's penal code, which sets a maximum pretrial detention period of 620 days for individuals being investigated for a felony, Al Jazeera reported.
Hussein has been kept in solitary confinement and had recently broken his arm, but it is alleged that the authorities have denied him proper medical treatment.
The United Nations has called on Egypt to end Hussein's "arbitrary detention", saying the "appropriate remedy would be to release Mr Hussein immediately".
