714 MPs vote, a record 99 per cent voting reported: Modi first to exercise his right

New Delhi, Jul 17 (UNI) A record estimated 99 per cent of polling was recorded in today’s presidential elections held in Parliament premises and state Assemblies across the country, Returning Officer for the polls and Lok Sabha Secretary General Anoop Mishra said here today. He said as many as 714 Members of Parliament from both the Houses exercised their right while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the "first to cast his vote in Parliament premises". "The good turnout of voting of elected representatives has been reported from across the country...This could be highest in recent times but I have to check," Mr Mishra said. He, however, said reports from few states were still awaited. Eyewitness accounts said Prime Minister arrived at the voting enclosures before 1000 hours and waited for a while to proceedings to begin. "We go by rules. The voting had to start sharp by 1000 hours and ....it is true Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to cast vote in Parliament premises," Mr Mishra said. BJP-led NDA’s Ram Nath Kovind, former Bihar Governor, is pitted against former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, the joint Opposition nominee in today’s elections. The President is chosen by an electoral college comprising all the MPs and MLAs in the country, with weighted votes apportioned. As many as 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha, 543 members from the Lok Sabha and 4,120 MLAs from the state Assemblies comprise the electors. "Hundred per cent voting have been reported from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Puducherry," he said.
