India trail by 211 runs with 7 wickets remaining in the innings.
Continuing with an overnight score of 285/9, England on day 2 were all out for 287 in 89.4 overs in the first Test here.
Skipper Virat Kohli 9 and Ajinkya Rahane 8 were at the crease when the lunch was declared.
India quickly lost wicket of opener Murali Vijay at 20 lbw in Curran's spell and KL Rahul in the 14th over
after being bowled Curran.
Vijay's 20 came off in 45 balls with 4 fours and Dhawan's 26 off 46 struck 3 fours.
After Vijay and Rahul's departure it was Dhawan who fell to Curran in the 16th over after being caught off by Malan.
For England it was Curran's 3/23 after 6 overs who dismantled batting line-up of Vijay, Dhawan and KL Rahul.
For India off-spinner R Ashwin struck 4/60 in 25 overs with 7 maiden while Mohammed Shami 3/64 in 19 overs with 2 maiden while Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav bagged one wickt each.
