10, Rajaji Marg to be the residence of Mr Pranab Mukherjee after he demits office tom

New Delhi, July 23 (UNI) As Mr Pranab Mukherjee demits office tomorrow after the end of his five-year tenure as President, he will move out of the grand Rashtrapati Bhawan to 10, Rajaji Marg, the heritage bungalow in Lutyen's Delhi that will be his post-retirement home. Officials in the Urban Development Ministry said that finishing touches were being given to the British-era bungalow, endowed with sloping red-tiled roof and fitted with chimneys, to welcome the outgoing president. 10, Rajaji Marg had also served as a retirement home for the late president APJ Abdul Kalam till his death in 2015, after which it was allotted to Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma. Mr Sharma, however, vacated the 10, Rajaji Marg house after it was allotted to Mr Mukherjee. Mr Sharma has shifted to the bungalow at 10 Akbar Road. The 10, Rajaji Marg house is spread over an area of 11,776 sq ft with the ground floor housing a library and an attached reading space for Mr Mukherjee, who is an avid reader. Earlier known as King George Avenue (named after British monarch King George V), the bungalow was, after Independence, renamed after C Rajgopalachari, the last Governor-General of India, who was fondly called 'Rajaji'. A retired President is entitled to rent-free accommodation anywhere in India with free water and electricity for the remainder of their life as per the President's Pension Rules, 1962. Mr Mukherjee , who had assumed office as the 13th President on July 25, 2012, will demit office tomorrow at the end of his tenure. Mr Ram Nath Kovind, who last served as the Governor of Bihar, was on July 20 elected as the 14th President of the country after he defeated the joint opposition nominee Meira Kumar. Mr Kovind will assume oath as the new President of the country on July 25. UNI AR SNU 1746
