New Delhi, Nov 21 (UNI) The Centre on Thursday announced the distribution of the 'FASTag' for free till December 1 to make its implementation mandatory for easy movement of vehicles on the toll plazas of National Highways from next month and also said that vehicles having no FASTag after December 1 will have to pay double toll for using FASTag lanes.
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari told a press conference here that free distribution of 'FASTag' started from today and will continue till December 1. 'FASTag' will be available at toll plazas and counters of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
He said these 'FASTag' will be mandatory on the toll plaza for every vehicle after December 1 and vehicles which do not have this tag will have to pay double toll on the toll plaza.
Till now, Rs 150 was required to be paid as security for this tag, but now the government has decided to give it free till December 1 so that all vehicle owners can use it on their vehicles.
The NHAI will pay the amount of tags to be distributed for free.
The Union Minister said that 'FASTag' will allow vehicles to move straight ahead on all plazas. This is a cashless system and by recharging this card one can easily cross the toll plaza. This will stop long queues of vehicles at the toll plaza. Till now, only one lane on toll plazas was used for 'Fastag' vehicles, but from December 1, all lanes will be 'FASTag' ones.
FASTag is a prepaid tag, affixed on vehicle's windscreen, that enables automatic deduction of toll charges and lets the vehicle pass through the toll plaza without stopping for the cash transaction.
