Alappuzha, Sep 29 (UNI) All five persons booked by the Alappuzha Cyber Police in connection with alleged objectionable social media posts targeting AICC general secretary K C Venugopal are Congress sympathisers, according to police sources.
The case was registered on a complaint filed by KPCC Political Affairs Committee member Johnson Abraham, who alleged that five social media profiles were used to circulate abusive and objectionable content against Venugopal. Kerala Police have sought details of the account holders from Meta as part of the investigation.
The five profiles named in the complaint belonged to Siju Samuel, K P Hamsa, Jafar K Aliyar, Abdul Khader Reshi and P C Pulamanthol. Abraham had submitted the complaint to the state police chief on July 20. As no action was taken for nearly two months, he subsequently approached Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala. Following this, the Cyber Division IG was entrusted with the investigation and the Alappuzha Cyber Police registered the case.
The alleged posts were circulated during the discussions within the Congress over the Chief Minister's post following the UDF's victory in the Kerala Assembly election. Venugopal was among the names discussed for the post at the time, police said.
The case has been registered under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to provocation with intent to cause a riot, besides other applicable provisions, police said. Meanwhile, Venugopal has said that he did not want any Congress worker to be punished in connection with the cyber attacks and urged those involved to introspect.
