Trump plans forming committee to oversee AI sector

Washington, Sept 30 (Sputnik) US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that he is considering the creation of a committee made up of 10 individuals to watch over artificial intelligence (AI).

"We are also thinking about forming a committee of some sorts where we put maybe ten people ... so the committee can watch over the whole enterprise," Trump told reporters after his meeting with the top executives of AI firms. The president expressed his belief that AI models would be "used for the good," further stressing that if they are used for ill purposes, they will be nabbed.

Moreover, companies will be tasked with a "tremendous" self-policing effort. In recent weeks, a public debate regarding AI-related risks has unfolded. Two employees from Anthropic shared the opinion that there was a 10% probability that AI could destroy humanity within the next decade. On September 12, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a global slowdown in the development of more powerful artificial intelligence models, citing safety concerns.

US billionaire Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supported the idea. On September 14, Trump dismissed claims that artificial intelligence would take over the world and destroy humanity as a hoax. The president publicly supports continued development in this field, asserting that the US cannot allow China to take the lead.
