Karnataka cabinet orders probe into mining irregularities

Nandi Hills, July 2 (UNI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar today announced that the state cabinet has decided to initiate a special investigation into mining irregularities and submit a comprehensive report within a month.
Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, Shivakumar said, "We have decided that the state cabinet should conduct a special investigation into the mining irregularities and submit a report within a month. Minister HK Patil has found some significant shortcomings. To safeguard the state's natural wealth, we have constituted a cabinet sub-committee under the leadership of the law minister."
The announcement comes in the wake of serious observations made by Cabinet Minister HK Patil, who recently highlighted lapses in mining lease renewals, encroachments on forest lands, and improper royalty collections.
In a separate media interaction, Patil stated that the government was losing substantial revenue due to systemic weaknesses and regulatory gaps. "There are glaring violations in the way some mining operations have been allowed to continue without proper oversight. The sub-committee will look into every aspect, including environmental damage, illegal mining zones, and lapses in enforcement," he said.
Patil emphasised that the state must act swiftly to protect its mineral wealth and hold accountable those responsible for irregularities. He called for stronger checks on mining permits and a crackdown on unlicensed operations, particularly in sensitive zones.
Meanwhile, Shivakumar also announced a major boost for the floriculture sector. "Until now, Bengaluru was the only city with a high-tech flower market. We have now approved the construction of a similar market in Chikkaballapur district at a cost of Rs 141 crore," he said.
He added that the new facility is expected to modernise the flower trade infrastructure in the region, improve logistics, and open up new export opportunities. "This initiative will not only promote horticulture and floriculture but also benefit local farmers and contribute to the rural economy," the Deputy CM said.
