Tashkent, July 4 (UNI) Eighteen people were killed and 243 others wounded in Uzbekistan after unrest broke out on July 1 in Nukus, the capital of Karakalpakstan region, media reports said on Monday.
Abror Mamatov, the prosecutor of the Uzbek Prosecutor General's Office, said: "In Nukus, as a result of the riots, 18 people died from serious injuries."
Uzbek National Guard spokesman Davron Jumaniyazov said 94 of the injured were still in the hospitals. He said that 516 people were detained.
On July 1, people gathered in Nukus' central outdoor market area demanding the release of a local blogger who called for 'a protest against constitutional amendments", according to Sputnik.
The protesters believe that Karakalpakstan may lose its right to secede from Uzbekistan if amendments were adopted, the reports added.
Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has declared a state of emergency till August 2 and imposed a curfew following the unrest.
