Sawan Barwal ends 44-year wait, wins historic Asian Games marathon silver

Nagoya, Sep 26 (UNI) Sawan Barwal ran into the history books on Saturday, ending India's 44-year wait for an Asian Games marathon medal with a record-breaking silver in the men's event here. The 28-year-old Indian Army runner from Himachal Pradesh clocked 2:11:37 to finish second behind Japan's Ichitaka Yamashita, who won gold in 2:10:49. China's Peiyou Feng took bronze in 2:12:13. Barwal's performance was significant on several counts. He broke his own national record of 2:11:58, set at the Rotterdam Marathon in April, improving it by 21 seconds, and produced a personal best in only his second competitive marathon. More…
