Kolkata, Aug 11 (UNI) Padma Bhusan recipient scientist Bikash Sinha on passed away on Friday at a nursing home in the city, official sources said.
He was 78.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, " Saddened to know about the untimely demise of the great scientist Bikash Sinha. "
" An illustrious son of Bengal, the talented nuclear physicist
made " us proud by his contributions to not only the world of
knowledge but also the ongoing public life, " she added.
" We could confer on him our highest state award 'Banga
Bibhushan' in 2022, and his personal presence on the dais inspired us. We could give him 'Rabindra Smriti Puraskar' too in 2022, " the
CM concluded.
She also expressed her sincerest condolences to his family,
friends, students and admirers.
Born in 1945 Sinha was a physicist, active in the fields of
nuclear physics and high energy physics.
Graduating from Calcutta University Sinha was the director of the
Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics and Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre and the chairman of the Board of Governors of the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur.
He also went to the UK for higher studies.
He retired from service as the director of Variable Energy
Cyclotron Centre and the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in June
2009.
Presently he was the Homi Bhabha Chair Professor of the Variable
Energy Cyclotron Centre. He was also a member of that scientific advisory board to the Prime Minister of India.
He received Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2010.
