10 Rajya Sabha candidates get elected unopposed in UP biennial polls

Lucknow, Oct 9 (UNI) Ten candidates, including eight from the BJP and two from the Samajwadi Party, have been elected unopposed to the 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in the biennial elections.

These 10 candidates were declared elected after the passage of the last date for withdrawal on Friday. The Returning Officer ( RO) handed over the winning certificate to the candidates or their representatives. Earlier, during scrutiny on October 7, papers of two independent candidates were rejected on technical grounds for not producing the proposers' names and their signatures.

The BJP's elected members include state minister Dharampal Singh, the party's OBC Morcha chief Prakash Pal, Shruti Gangwar, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Radhakant Ojha, Gopi Krishna Pandey, and Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan. The Samajwadi Party's elected members were senior leader Ram Gopal Yadav and Reliance Industries executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani.

The terms of the current members in these seats expire on November 25. Outgoing RS members are union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and B L Verma, Arun Singh, Brijlal, Seema Dwivedi, Neeraj Shekhar, and Geeta Shakya ( all BJP), Ram Gopal Yadav of SP, and Ramji Lal of BSP. Except for Ram Gopal Yadav, none others were repeated.
