Samik Bhattacharya files his papers for post of BJP chief in West Bengal

Kolkata, July 2 (UNI) Rajya Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya today filed his nomination papers for
the post of president of BJP's West Bengal unit in the presence of incumbent and Union minister Sukanta
Majumdar and leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in their party office at Salt Lake in the city.
Filing of papers by 61-year-old BJP spokesperson took place hours after a phone call from party's national
president Jagat Prakash Nadda to the state functionaries asking them to ensure submission of Bhattacharya's
nomination for the post of the Bengal unit president on schedule.
Bhattacharya, who was camping in New Delhi, arrived this morning and filed his nomination papers in
the presence of Majumdar and Adhikari and other senior leaders.
Union minister Sukanta Majumdar has been at the helm though his present term ended in September last. The BJP central leadership wants someone who can get along with all -- moderates as well as aggressive leaders. Majumdar recently said the post of the party president would be based on consensus as the party is emerging a strong contender to upstage the ruling TMC. He, however, said anyone was free to contest the post.
Bhattacharya also has an RSS background and is known for handling any situation a party might face in the coming election year.
Meanwhile, central BJP leader Sunil Bansal also arrived and Ravi Shankar Prasad is also expected to be in the city to oversee the process for choosing a new state unit president.

Naveen flays BJP MLA's remarks against BJD woman leader

04 Jul 2025 | 11:34 AM

Bhubaneswar, July 4 (UNI) BJD chief Naveen Patnaik has strongly condemned the remarks made by BJP MLA Santosh Khatua against senior BJD leader Lekhashree Samantasinghar, calling them "deeply disturbing and unacceptable."
Taking to his social media platform X, Patnaik said, "Publicly defaming a woman as a political response reflects a sick mentality and is aimed at silencing women in public life. This sends a message that all women should remain silent."
The leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly further stated, “What is even more disheartening is the complete silence of BJP leaders. Not a single member has come forward to condemn the MLA’s hateful comment or hold him accountable.”
Patnaik added that the lack of response from the ruling party reflects its true stance on women in public life. “Before offering advice on women’s empowerment, political leaders must first learn the basic principle of respecting women,” he said.
