Five held for illegal felling in Kawrthah Forest Division, remanded to judicial custody

Aizawl, July 2 (UNI) Forest officials under the Zamuang Forest Range of Kawrthah Forest Division in western Mizoram's Mamit district apprehended five individuals and one alleged employer on June 29 for illegal felling of teak trees within a protected plantation area near the banks of the Teirei River.
The arrests were made during a forest protection operation.
The accused were caught in the act of cutting down trees from the ‘1991 Teak Plantation’—a plantation established by the Forest Department—without authorisation. The operation was led
by the Range Officer and his staff as part of routine surveillance duties along the riverbanks.
Following their arrest, a case was registered at the Mamit District Court on July 1 under the supervision of the Assistant Conservator of Forests, Kawrthah Division. The six accused have
since been remanded to judicial custody.
The Forest Department noted that the teak plantation, set up in the early 1990s, has witnessed increasing incidents of unauthorised tree felling in recent times. Despite ongoing protection efforts, these illegal activities have continued. The site of the latest offence falls under the 1991 Department Teak Plantation and overlaps with the Teirei Riverine Reserved Forest and Tut-Langkaih Protected Council Reserved Forest.
Felling and removing trees from these protected areas without permission is a punishable offence that can lead to imprisonment. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Mizoram (Forest) Act, 1955 and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
A power chainsaw used in the offence has been seized, and the felled timber has been taken into custody by the Forest Department.
Kawrthah Forest Division has urged the public to refrain from engaging in illegal tree felling and to report any such activities to the authorities.

Bhubaneswar, July 4 (UNI) BJD chief Naveen Patnaik has strongly condemned the remarks made by BJP MLA Santosh Khatua against senior BJD leader Lekhashree Samantasinghar, calling them "deeply disturbing and unacceptable."
Taking to his social media platform X, Patnaik said, "Publicly defaming a woman as a political response reflects a sick mentality and is aimed at silencing women in public life. This sends a message that all women should remain silent."
The leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly further stated, “What is even more disheartening is the complete silence of BJP leaders. Not a single member has come forward to condemn the MLA’s hateful comment or hold him accountable.”
Patnaik added that the lack of response from the ruling party reflects its true stance on women in public life. “Before offering advice on women’s empowerment, political leaders must first learn the basic principle of respecting women,” he said.
