Rahul Gandhi launches 'Satyagraha' platform to link citizens' struggles with national debate

New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday launched a new public platform, 'Satyagraha', around the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, seeking to connect people across India who are using peaceful resistance to raise their voices against injustice and demand that their concerns be heard.

Unveiled around Gandhi Jayanti, the initiative draws on Mahatma Gandhi's ideals of truth, non-violence and resistance to injustice. The Congress said the platform was intended to carry the spirit of Satyagraha into contemporary struggles being waged by citizens over a range of local and national issues. "Across India, people are standing up against injustice.

As Leader of the Opposition, your fight is my fight," Rahul Gandhi said while announcing the initiative. "It's time for a new Satyagraha. Tell me the issues you're fighting for. I am listening." In a video message accompanying the launch, Rahul Gandhi said protests were taking place across the country over issues including land rights, women's rights, the rights of Dalits and OBCs, education and examinations. "Truth is being suppressed all across the country. There are multiple protests happening across the country," he said.

He said the objective of the initiative was to help organise these movements, bring them together on a common map and work with those involved to address the issues they were fighting for. "We want to help organise these protests, put them together on one map and work together with you to see how we can help you resolve what you're fighting for," he said. Rahul Gandhi said his constitutional role as Leader of the Opposition also required him to help citizens resist when they believed their rights or the truth were being suppressed. "As Leader of Opposition, it is important for me to help people resist where truth is being crushed," he said.

"The truth is important. It's important at the highest levels but it's important that we fight for it in every corner of the country." The 'Satyagraha' platform allows citizens to submit details of the issues they are confronting, identify the concerns that matter to them and indicate who or what they believe is standing in the way of their rights. Their submissions will be represented on a 'Satyagraha Map', with individual issues appearing as pins to create a nationwide visual picture of local struggles.

The organisers said the platform was designed to connect local campaigns and grievances with a wider national audience and facilitate interventions depending on the nature and urgency of the issues raised. Its stated aim is to help take citizens' concerns "from the streets to the Sansad". The launch comes against the backdrop of a series of political and civic campaigns in which the Opposition has sought to mobilise public opinion on issues ranging from electoral rolls and democratic institutions to social justice, education, employment and citizens' rights.

Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly framed his political interventions around constitutional rights, democratic accountability and what he describes as the need to protect truth. By invoking the legacy of Gandhi's Satyagraha, the new platform seeks to place peaceful resistance at the centre of its engagement with contemporary grievances while providing citizens with a direct channel to bring local issues to the attention of the Leader of the Opposition and the wider national political debate.
