PM Modi to inaugurate global conference on Environment and Climate Dynamics in Delhi
New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a two-day International Conference on "The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics" at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Saturday, September 19, bringing together judges, environmental experts, policymakers and judicial representatives from 17 countries for discussions on emerging environmental and climate challenges.
According to a release issued by the Prime Minister's Office on Friday, Modi will inaugurate the conference at around 10 am. The conference, being organised by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), will be held on September 19 and 20. The international gathering will bring together a wide range of stakeholders engaged in environmental adjudication, policymaking, regulation and enforcement. Participants will include Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, District Court Judges, environmental experts, Secretaries of various union ministries and senior government officials, besides representatives of State Judicial Academies and State Legal Services Authorities.
Members of State Expert Appraisal Committees (SEACs), State Environment Impact Assessment Authorities (SEIAAs), State Wetland Authorities and other institutions involved in environmental governance will also participate in the deliberations. The conference will have an international dimension with the participation of eminent Judges and judicial representatives from 17 countries.
Their presence is expected to facilitate an exchange of perspectives on environmental law, climate change and institutional responses to increasingly complex ecological challenges. The conference is aimed at providing a common platform for the exchange of judicial approaches, scientific knowledge, environmental governance practices and institutional experiences across jurisdictions.
The deliberations will focus on critical environmental and climate challenges, as well as gaps emerging in policy formulation, implementation and enforcement. A key focus of the conference will be on strengthening environmental governance and institutional cooperation by bringing judicial, scientific, administrative and regulatory perspectives into a common dialogue. The discussions are also expected to examine how institutions can respond more effectively to environmental challenges that increasingly cut across administrative and national boundaries.
The National Green Tribunal, established under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, is a specialised judicial body dealing with matters concerning environmental protection, conservation of forests and other natural resources, and enforcement of legal rights relating to the environment. Its jurisdiction has covered a broad range of issues, including pollution, environmental clearances, wetlands, forests, waste management and ecological conservation. The conference comes against the backdrop of growing concerns over climate change, environmental degradation and the effective enforcement of environmental safeguards.
Addressing these challenges increasingly requires coordination among governments, courts, scientific institutions and regulatory authorities. The participation of judicial representatives from different countries is expected to provide an opportunity for sharing experiences in environmental adjudication and examining institutional mechanisms for addressing complex ecological issues, including those with cross-border implications. The two-day conference is therefore expected to bring together legal, scientific and administrative expertise to discuss evolving approaches to environmental governance and climate-related challenges.
