I'm with you: Delhi CM Gupta assures women of safety, warns offenders of strict action

New Delhi, Sep 30 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday assured women and girls of their safety, saying there is no place for fear, terror or oppression in the national capital and warning that those who threaten their safety will face strict consequences.

Addressing students at an event at Maitreyi College, Gupta said every girl should be able to move freely and live without fear while emphasising that strict action will be taken against those who attempt to threaten the safety of women, and such acts will not be tolerated under any circumstances. "Today, as a woman, as a mother, and also as a Chief Minister, I want to say to all my daughters sitting here: In every voice of yours, in every act of your courage, in every need of yours, and in every situation concerning your safety, I am with you," she said.

Gupta said there would be no tolerance for attempts to threaten or intimidate women in the city. "There is no place for fear, no place for terror, and no place for oppression in Delhi. If anyone dares to attempt such audacity, they will understand the consequences themselves," she said. She added that those responsible would not be spared and would face strict action for their deeds.

Taking a firm stance on women's safety, the Chief Minister said the government would take every necessary step to ensure that Delhi remains a safe city and that the voices of women and girls are heard. She also expressed happiness that the daughters of the country are speaking up and urged that they should never be silenced or suppressed. Congratulating the Maitreyi College fraternity on its Diamond Jubilee year, Gupta said, "Women-led Development is becoming the strength of New India today."

She said that whenever incidents involving women's safety occur, families and society often respond by imposing restrictions on girls. "If restrictions have to be imposed, boys should also be taught," she said, stressing the need for greater gender sensitisation. Gupta said boys must be taught to respect women and understand that a girl's choices and consent must be respected. She emphasised that ensuring women's safety is a collective responsibility and called on society to understand both its rights and duties.

"'No' means 'No'-that should be clear in his understanding. And on this, there is no compromise in Delhi city... no compromise at all. Whether you're a man, a woman, a boy or a girl, every person in society, whether a leader or a member of the public, should know that if you do anything wrong in this city, you will not be spared," Gupta said.
