Washington, Sep 26 (Sputnik/UNI) Negotiations between the United States and Iran about Tehran's proposal of a seven-day plan to reopen the Hormuz Strait are constructive, Reuters reported , citing a US official.
Iran has conveyed to the United States a seven-day plan providing for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Friday. "Iran has conveyed to the United States, through Qatar, a concrete seven-day plan. If the necessary conditions are met, the strait can be reopened, and normal maritime passage restored within seven days. The choice now rests with the United States," Araghchi told reporters.
The timeline for the plan will start as soon as Washington accepts it, the foreign minister added. According to the US official, the sides are conducting constructive talks via mediators and continue to discuss nuclear issues. On February 28, the United States and Israel began striking targets in Iran, to which the Iranian side responded with strikes of its own. In mid-June, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum aimed at a cessation of hostilities, but shortly afterward, they exchanged strikes again.
The conflict remains unresolved, with sporadic resumption of hostilities. Washington has, however, chosen to increase its economic pressure against the Islamic Republic in a push to end the conflict through the creation of additional financial hardships for Tehran.
