India Post to commemorate 250th year of launching of first copper postal ticket

Patna, Mar 28 (UNI) India Post will organise year-long celebrations from March 31 to commemorate the 250th year of the launching of the first postal copper ticket in the world from Patna in 1774.
Chief Postmaster General of Bihar Anil Kumar told media persons here that it was a matter of great pride that the first copper postal ticket in the world was launched in Patna, then known as Azimabad in 1774. Its launching also opened the door of the post office for the common man, as earlier the facility of the post office was available to only corporate houses and influential persons like Zamindars and Rajas (Kings), he added. Copper ticket was valued at ' Azimabad ek anni' and ' Azimabad do anni ' and it used to be charged depending upon the distance of the destination where the letters or consignments were to be sent, he further added.
" It is the same location where presently GPO is based in Patna from where the first copper ticket was launched ", Kumar said adding that the copper ticket was then used as a prepaid token to pay the postage charge. Those used to avail of the facility would have to pay the charge to get a copper ticket as token and then deposit the same at the counter, as a charge against the postage, he said adding that staff on the counter used to put the seal on the envelope as ' paid ' after receiving the copper token. However, a symbol was used for the seal to indicate that payment had been made instead of " paid " as being used presently. he pointed out.
