Meghalaya Marriage Act reduced to 'paper tiger' says MSM Convener Micheal Syiem

Shillong, Sep 29 (UNI) The Mait Shaphrang Movement (MSM), a civil society group, has asked the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) to insist on the state government reintroduce the preamble to the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012, which was deleted by a 2022 amendment. In a letter to MSCW Chairperson Iamonlang M. Syiem, MSM convener Micheal Syiem argued that the Amendment Act of the state's marriage registration law has stripped the law of its teeth by deleting crucial clauses.
