Abhishek moves Calcutta HC seeking restoration of security cover

Kolkata, September 28 (UNI) Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee Monday moved the Calcutta High Court seeking restoration of his security cover, alleging that he has faced several attacks since his security was withdrawn following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Abhishek's lawyer, Ayan Bhattacharya, mentioned the matter before Justice Krishna Rao and sought an urgent hearing, citing concerns over his client's security. The court, however, did not entertain the plea for an immediate hearing but allowed Abhishek to file the petition.

The court said the matter would be heard on October 6. According to Bhattacharya, Abhishek was provided Z-plus security before the Assembly elections. He alleged that the security cover was withdrawn after the election results following the change of government in the state. The lawyer told the court that Abhishek currently has no security personnel accompanying him, apart from a few home guards.

He argued that the issue required judicial intervention given his position as the national general secretary of the principal opposition party in the state. Bhattacharya further claimed that Abhishek had been attacked several times after the withdrawal of his security cover.

He questioned the decision to withdraw the Z-plus security that had been provided to the Trinamool leader before the elections. Seeking an early hearing, the lawyer submitted that the matter was urgent as Abhishek was allegedly left without a formal security contingent.

The court, however, fixed October 6 for hearing the petition. Abhishek has previously approached the Calcutta High Court in connection with several cases. In August, the court had directed that no coercive action be taken against him in connection with three FIR-related cases until November 30.
