Curfew-like restrictions in downtown, SeK in Srinagar

Curfew-like restrictions in downtown, SeK in Srinagar

Srinagar, Nov 18 (UNI) Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in the downtown, Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) and areas falling under two police stations in the civil lines and old city since early Saturday morning.
The historic Jamia Masjid was again closed for devotees after allowing Friday prayers for three successive weeks, including yesterday.
The authorities have already ordered closure of all educational institutions, though examinations would be conducted as per schedule while rail service has been suspended in the valley as a precautionary measure following death of a militant in a brief encounter in the downtown last evening. A Sub Inspector was also killed and another policeman injured in the gunfight.
Officials said that District Magistrate (DM), Srinagar has imposed restrictions under Section 144 CrPC on Saturday in the areas under the jurisdiction of police Parimpora, Khanyar, Nowhatta, Safakadal, M R Gunj and Rainawari in the downtown and SeK in Srinagar. “Partial restrictions have also been imposed in Maisuma in the civil lines and Kralkhud in the old city,” they said.
However, the situation on the ground was totally different as all main roads were closed with barbed wire and by parked bulletproof vehicles to prevent any traffic or pedestrian movement in SeK and downtown.
The entire Nallahmar road from Parimpora to Khanyar has been closed and large number of security forces and state police personnel were deployed to strictly implement the restrictions. The otherwise very busy road presented a deserted look with only security forces, wearing bullet proof jackets, deployed after every ten feet. The road has been closed with barbed wire at several places and people were directed to remain indoors.
Residents on both sides of the road alleged that they were not being allowed to purchase essential commodities. “We were expecting restrictions on Friday, but there was no apprehension that restrictions would be imposed today,” Muzaffar Ahmad, a retired employee, said, adding that 'we could have purchased essentials yesterday had there been any indication.'
