Turning weeds into wealth: Wayanad trains tribal communities in biochar production

Wayanad, Oct 11 (UNI) More than 215 participants have benefited from a capacity-building initiative at Muthanga in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary to convert invasive plant species into biochar, opening up opportunities for improved soil health, forest restoration and sustainable livelihoods. The four-day programme provided practical training to more than 165 tribal and forest-dependent community members and Eco-Development Committee (EDC) members in three batches. The initiative introduced communities to low-cost techniques for producing biochar from invasive vegetation that otherwise poses ecological challenges in Kerala's Western Ghats.
