IMD forecasts heavy rain in parts of Northeast, South India; monsoon withdrawal line passes through Chandigarh
Panchkula, Sep 30 (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Northeast and southern India.
The southwest monsoon withdrawal line remains over Gurdaspur, Chandigarh, and other areas in northern and western India. In its All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued at 8:27 a.m., the IMD stated that heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated locations in Assam and Meghalaya, interior Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on September 30.
The IMD reported that a depression over coastal Myanmar and the adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal and southeast Bangladesh moved north-northwest and weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over north Myanmar, adjoining southeast Bangladesh, Mizoram, and the northeast Bay of Bengal as of 5:30 a.m. on September 30. "It is very likely to move north-northwest towards Mizoram, Tripura, and adjoining southeast Bangladesh, and gradually weaken into a low-pressure area over the next 24 hours," the IMD said. According to the bulletin, the southwest monsoon withdrawal line continues to pass through 32.5°N/72.5°E, Gurdaspur, Chandigarh, Muzaffarnagar, Aligarh, Dholpur, Udaipur, Deesa, Naliya, and 23.0°N/67.8°E. A western disturbance remains as a cyclonic circulation over north Haryana and nearby areas, at 3.1-4.5 km above mean sea level, with a trough in the middle and upper-tropospheric westerlies.
For September 30, the IMD forecast For September 30, the IMD forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph at isolated locations in Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are expected over coastal Andhra Pradesh, interior Karnataka, and Odisha. Gusty winds of 30- 40 kmph are also likely at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya, Kerala and Mahe, Madhya Pradesh, Marathwada and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Strong surface winds were forecast at isolated places over Andhra Pradesh.
The IMD stated that isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh from October 2 to 4. Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to receive isolated heavy rain on September 30. In southern India, isolated heavy rainfall is forecast over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from September 30 to October 1; Kerala and Mahe from September 30 to October 3; North Interior Karnataka on September 30; and South Interior Karnataka from September 30 to October 2. On October 1, heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated locations in Kerala and Mahe, South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. For October 2, the IMD forecasts isolated heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala and Mahe, and South Interior Karnataka, Haryana and Delhi are forecast to remain dry.
The IMD's seven-day rainfall forecast indicates that Punjab and the Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi subdivision will remain dry from September 30 to October 6. Himachal Pradesh is also forecast to remain dry throughout the seven-day period. Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are expected to remain dry through October 4, with scattered rainfall likely on October 5 and 6. Uttarakhand, however, is expected to receive isolated rainfall from September 30 to October 2 and again on October 5 and 6. East Uttar Pradesh is forecast to receive isolated rainfall on September 30, followed by mostly dry conditions.
In eastern India, isolated to scattered rainfall is forecast over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from September 30 to October 6. Jharkhand may receive rain from September 30 to October 2, while Bihar could see rainfall on September 30 and again from October 3 to 6. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph, are forecast over Bihar from October 3 to 6 and over Odisha from September 30 to October 1. In western India, isolated to scattered rainfall is forecast over Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra from September 30 to October 6. The Gujarat Region, Saurashtra, and Kutch are likely to receive rain from September 30 to October 1.
The IMD has issued a warning for squally weather over parts of the Bay of Bengal. On September 30, winds of 45-55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, are likely over the north Andaman Sea and along and off the south Myanmar coast adjoining parts of the east-central Bay of Bengal. Squally weather with winds of 40-50 kmph, weather with winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, is also likely over the south Andaman Sea, along and off the west Myanmar coast, and parts of the southeast Bay of Bengal. Winds could lead to waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas, localised landslides and mudslides, disruption of road and rail traffic, damage to vulnerable structures and standing crops, and reduced visibility in affected areas.
The IMD advises people in areas experiencing severe weather to monitor conditions, move to safer locations if necessary, avoid sheltering under trees during lightning, and stay away from bodies of water and conductive objects. The IMD bulletin covers the period from September 30 to October 6. Daily forecasts and warnings are valid from 8:30 a.m. on the specified day until 8:30 a.m. the following day.
