Rahul Gandhi accuses Goa BJP govt of looting people's land, vows fight against 'vote theft'

New Delhi, Oct 18 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Goa government, alleging rampant corruption, the transfer of ordinary people's land to wealthy industrialists and a systematic assault on democratic institutions.

Addressing a major public meeting at the MCC Ground in Margao, South Goa, at the culmination of the Congress's 28-day 'Goy Rakhonn Yatra' (Save Goa Yatra), Gandhi also targeted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of "vote theft", declaring that the party would continue its fight to expose electoral irregularities and hold those responsible accountable. "We are the protectors of the Constitution. By stealing votes, they have attacked the Constitution and undermined our sacred duty. We will never tolerate this," Gandhi said, asserting that defending the Constitution was a fundamental responsibility of the Congress and warning that the party would not allow alleged electoral manipulation to go unchallenged.

Taking direct aim at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Gandhi questioned the handling of allegations of electoral irregularities and maintained that the issues raised by the Congress could not be brushed aside indefinitely. Referring to the more than 45 defamation cases filed against him, he pointed out that no case had been initiated against him over his allegations of vote theft. He suggested that a formal legal challenge could bring the matter under greater scrutiny and compel those concerned to respond to questions about the integrity of the electoral process. The remarks marked a renewed escalation in the Congress's confrontation with the Election Commission, with the party making electoral transparency and accountability central to its campaign against the BJP. The Congress has repeatedly alleged that irregularities in the electoral process threaten the principle of equal representation and undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.

Gandhi maintained that the fight against alleged vote theft was inseparable from the larger struggle to safeguard the Constitution and democratic rights. Turning his attention to Goa, Gandhi alleged that corruption had become pervasive under the BJP government, making the sharp claim that "Goa might well be the most corrupt state in the entire country". He accused the administration of facilitating the transfer of land and other resources belonging to ordinary Goans to wealthy industrialists, alleging that the interests of powerful business groups were being prioritised over those of local communities. Gandhi argued that the issue was not merely one of corruption but also concerned Goa's future, the protection of its natural environment and the preservation of its distinctive cultural and social identity.

He alleged that ordinary people were being deprived of control over their land and resources while the state was failing to provide adequate employment opportunities for its young population. He also suggested that the concentration of economic benefits in the hands of wealthy and influential interests, at the expense of local communities, reflected a pattern visible in other states governed by the BJP. The Congress leader also raised concerns over the treatment of student protesters, referring to the alleged use of pellet guns and contrasting it with Goa's earlier reputation for having a world-class education system.

His remarks sought to link the state government's response to dissent with broader questions of democratic freedoms, educational opportunities and the treatment of young people. He argued that the aspirations and rights of Goa's youth were being undermined at a time when they should be at the centre of the state's development priorities. The 'Goy Rakhonn Yatra', which began on September 22, covered all 40 Assembly constituencies in Goa over 28 days, seeking to mobilise public opinion around land rights, environmental protection, employment and the preservation of the state's identity ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Gandhi joined state Congress leaders and party workers for the final leg of the march from Calconda to the MCC Ground in Margao, walking alongside supporters as the campaign reached its culmination. The yatra sought to project the protection of Goa's land, natural resources and economic future as a defining political issue, arguing that the state's development should not come at the cost of unchecked commercial exploitation or the interests of politically influential groups.

The Congress maintained that local communities must retain a decisive voice in matters affecting their homes, livelihoods and the future of generations to come. By bringing land rights, corruption and electoral integrity together at the concluding rally, Gandhi sought to frame the Congress's challenge to the BJP as a wider fight over democratic accountability and the rights of ordinary citizens. The party is seeking to turn concerns over land acquisition, environmental degradation and limited employment opportunities into a broader political movement ahead of the next Assembly election. The Margao rally thus brought together the two principal strands of the Congress's campaign: allegations that democratic institutions were being weakened by electoral malpractice and accusations that the BJP government was allowing Goa's land and resources to be appropriated at the expense of its people. With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, Gandhi's intervention signalled the Congress's intention to make corruption, land protection, youth employment and the credibility of the electoral process central to its political battle against the BJP in the coastal state.
