Kolkata, Oct 7 (UNI) Thousands of Congress workers took part in a protest march in Kolkata on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the election process.
State party president Subhankar Sarkar and other senior leaders participated in the march in central Kolkata. Sarkar also demanded a re-poll in Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies, alleging criminal intimidation of voters and removal of polling agents.
"The rally is part of Congress' campaign over the allegations of irregularities in the electoral process and the party's demand for accountability from the Election Commission. BJP-ruled state police manhandled our workers," Sarkar said. The protesters marched from a cinema hall on Bentinck Street to near Lok Bhavan, about a kilometre away.
They raised slogans against the Chief Election Commissioner and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Congress supporters also carried placards that sought legal action against Gyanesh Kumar. The rally disrupted vehicular traffic in the city's central business district.
