Japan: Ruling LDP retains single-party majority

Tokyo, Nov 1(UNI) Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party(LDP) managed to hold on to their single-party majority in the country's general election on Sunday, in what is a big win for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida who took power just a month ago, BBC reported on Monday.
The LDP managed to win more than 233 seats in the lower house which is enough for it to govern without its coalition partner Komeito.
Mr Kishida, 64, was elected the leader of the LDP earlier this month after his predecessor, Yoshihide Suga, stepped down in September after just a year in office.
Mr Kishida's resignation came amid plummeting poll ratings for the LDP following an unpopular push to continue with the Tokyo Olympics despite public concern about surging COVID-19 cases.
