US sanctions FDLR, M23 Commanders over alleged war crimes in eastern DRC

Washington, Jun 3 (UNI) The United States on Wednesday announced new sanctions targeting senior commanders of two armed groups operating in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) and the Rwanda-backed March 23 Movement (M23) to address threats to stability and prosperity in eastern DRC.
The U.S. stated it is “taking further action to address threats to stability and prosperity in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)” by designating key figures including Gustave Kubwayo, described as a commander of an FDLR intelligence and special operations unit, and John Imani Nzenze, identified as the chief of intelligence for M23.
US also designated John Imani Nzenze, chief of intelligence for the Rwanda-backed M23, an armed group that has committed killings, serious human rights abuses, and attacks on civilians in eastern DRC.
