The heat crisis India can no longer ignore

Dr Sudheer Kumar Shukla and Dr Neha Tyagi
New Delhi, Jun 25 (UNI) India’s summers have always been hot. May 2026 was not a freak of weather; it was a bill coming due for a planet warmed by decades of unchecked emissions and for a country whose policymakers keep responding with heat action plans on paper and indifference on the ground.
Delhi’s Ridge station recorded 46.5 degrees Celsius that month, the highest temperature ever documented in the city. By the morning of 22 May, all 50 of the world’s hottest cities were in India; by the afternoon, India accounted for 97 of the world’s 100 hottest cities. Balangir, in Odisha, hit 45 deg C before 11 a.m. and 48 deg C by 3 p.m.; Sasaram, in Bihar, matched it; Varanasi hit 47 deg C.. Humidity in several cities fell to single digits, the kind of dry heat that turns a hot day into a medical emergency.
