Sensex tumbles over 1,800 pts amid sharp afternoon sell-off

New Delhi, Jul 8 (UNI) Indian equity benchmark BSE Sensex witnessed a sharp sell-off on Wednesday, plunging more than 1,800 points in afternoon trade as broad-based selling weighed heavily on investor sentiment.
At around 2:47 pm, the Sensex was trading at 76,360.31, down 1,820.41 points, or 2.33 per cent, from its previous close of 78,180.72.
The benchmark had opened at 77,816.45 and climbed to an intraday high of 77,851.18. However, selling pressure intensified in the second half of the session, dragging the index to an intraday low of 76,359.05. The index lost nearly 1,500 points from its day's high, indicating a broad market decline.
Despite the sharp fall, the Sensex remains above its 52-week low of 71,545.81, though it is significantly below its 52-week high of 86,159.02.
The steep decline reflects weak market sentiment amid heavy selling across sectors, with investors closely monitoring domestic developments and global market cues for further direction.
