Retailers and others prefer to hire hotel management graduates

Chennai, Sept 3 (UNI) One of the standard complaints of the hotel industry is getting human resources as even hotel management graduates are looking at sectors other than hospitality.
Several non-hospitality sectors are lapping up the graduates passing out of the hotel management colleges.
“There is a trend of auto dealers, retailers, quick commerce platforms, and other consumer-facing industries hiring hotel management graduates. These sectors are increasingly recognising the value of hospitality-trained professionals for roles that require customer interaction, service excellence, and operational efficiency,” Deepesh Gupta, Director and Head of General Staffing at Adecco India told UNI.
“The hotel management graduates are trained in interacting with guests, hygiene, self grooming and other aspects. Non-hospitality companies, particularly the retail chains, find these aspects advantageous as they need not spend on training,” said Siddharth Malhotra, Director Operations, Pricol Gourmet Pvt Ltd.
Elaborating on that Gupta said the value the non-hospitality sectors see in the hotel management graduates are:
(a) Customer Service Expertise: Hotel management graduates are trained in delivering high-touch customer experiences, which is crucial for retail, auto showrooms, and quick commerce platforms
(b) Soft Skills & Grooming: Their strong interpersonal skills, professional grooming, and ability to handle customer complaints gracefully make them ideal for front-line roles.
(c) Operational Discipline: They are well-versed in managing operations, logistics, and service standards—skills that translate well into retail and dealership environments.
(d) Sales Orientation: Many hotel management programs include modules on sales and marketing, making graduates suitable for roles like relationship managers, showroom executives, and customer experience leads.
(e) Adaptability: Hospitality graduates are trained to work in dynamic, high-pressure environments, which aligns well with the fast-paced nature of quick commerce and retail.
Questioned as why do the hotel management graduates opt for non-hospitality jobs Gupta cited factors like:
• Better Work-Life Balance: Hotel jobs often involve long hours, night shifts, and weekend work. Retail and auto sectors may offer more structured schedules.
• Higher Entry-Level Salaries: Some non-hospitality sectors offer better compensation packages and faster growth opportunities.
• Career Progression: Roles in retail and auto sectors often come with clearer paths to managerial positions, especially in customer experience and operations.
• Perception of Prestige: Working with well-known consumer brands is seen as more aspirational by some students.
• Diverse Opportunities: Students are increasingly exploring roles in co-working spaces, real estate, and corporate services where their hospitality skills are valued.
“Unlike the hotel industry, non-hospitality sectors offer better pay, fixed working hours,” agreed Malhotra.
