Prohibitory orders issued in Gurugram as 10,000 factory workers go on strike over wage hike

Chandigarh, April 8 (UNI) The industrial hub of IMT Manesar in Gurugram witnessed significant unrest on Wednesday as over 10,000 contract employees from more than half a dozen major manufacturing units, including Satyam, Munjal Showa, and Rico, launched an indefinite strike. The workers are demanding a substantial increase in wages and improved working conditions. The demonstration, which saw large participation from women workers, led to a total halt in production across several units, sparking concerns regarding the stability of the automobile sector's supply chain.
In response to the escalating situation and reports of scuffles between protesters and security forces, the District Administration invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC).
Gurugram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ajay Kumar stated that the prohibitory orders were implemented based on police inputs suggesting potential threats to public safety, traffic disruption, and law and order. Under these orders, the assembly of five or more persons without prior permission is strictly prohibited in the IMT Manesar area, along with a ban on carrying any weapons or blocking public roads.
