Higher incidences of breast & colon cancer being seen in Goa: Expert

Panaji, Feb 3 (UNI) Much higher incidences of breast and colon cancer are being seen in Goa, according to an oncologist at a private hospital in the city.
Speaking to UNI, Dr Eugene Rent, Consultant Surgical Oncologist, Manipal Hospital, Goa, said,''Firstly, let’s look at the scenario of cancer in Goa. From what I have seen over recent years, the incidence of cancer, that is the total number of cases seen is on par with the rest of the country but it’s the type of cancer that you see that varies. For example, if you look at North East India, Gall bladder cancer is a very common entity whereas in South India you would see just a handful a year in the entire zone. Now what is troubling about the cancer incidence in Goa is that we are seeing a much higher incidence of breast cancer and colon cancer in the state.''
When asked is lifestyle to be blamed for that, he said, ''Cancers of the breast are commonly seen in unmarried women, late marriages, women not having children and not breast feeding children. All these risk factors are on the rise in the fast growing era that we are living in. Similarly, colon cancer has a lot to do with the diet we consume and a worsening of diet choices means higher incidence of colon cancer.''
