GI push to boost Karnataka's rural economy as four iconic products near recognition

Bengaluru, July 9 (UNI) Karnataka's drive to strengthen its rural economy and preserve its traditional heritage has received a boost with four iconic products, led by the renowned Tiptur copra, moving closer to securing Geographical Indication (GI) status.
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is facilitating the GI registration process for Tiptur copra from Tumakuru district, Hoysala-style stone sculptures, Sanekatte natural salt from Uttara Kannada district and Kumbi Mudli, a rare taro variety grown in the Joida region of Uttara Kannada.
The proposed registrations are aimed at protecting the unique identity of the products while enabling farmers, artisans and traditional producers to access premium domestic and international markets. GI recognition is also expected to improve branding, prevent misuse of product names and enhance income opportunities in rural areas.
