CII IGBC launches ‘Mission on Net Zero’ on World Earth day

Hyderabad, Apr 23 (UNI) On the occasion of World Earth day, CII’s Indian Green Building Council has launched ‘IGBC Mission on Net Zero’.
The vision of CII-IGBC is to facilitate ‘India to become one of the foremost countries in transforming to ‘Net Zero’ by 2050’.
As part of this mission, more than 250 leading organisations from Indian building sector have committed to achieve Net Zero status for their new and existing buildings.
CII demonstrated India’s first platinum-rated green building – CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre at Hyderabad in the year 2004, which triggered the green building movement in India.
Recently, the building has achieved Net Zero Energy status and acts as a demonstration project for others to follow, a release here said on Friday.
Sharing his views on the occasion, Mr Jamshyd Godrej, Chairman CII-GBC said “Climate change poses an existential crisis for humanity. With rising global temperatures, melting Ice caps, rising sea levels and man induced natural calamities, the effects of climate change are now more evident than ever before.
Hence, on the cusp of Earth day, it is important that we rededicate ourselves to the mission on combating climate change. We are witnessing a global movement that emphasizes the need to be Net zero by 2050 and developing countries such as India will have a key role to play in this mission.
Providing her insights, Ms. Cristina Gamboa, CEO, World Green Building Council (WGBC) gave an overview of WGBC’s vision and their initiatives on facilitating Green Building councils to promote Net Zero in their respective countries.
She called for alignment, commonality, awareness, and education as we embrace the Net zero vision.
Ms Cristina added that Net Zero is not just for construction sector but for humanity, at large.
The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) was established by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in 2001, with a vision ‘to enable a sustainable built environment for all’.
CII has been facilitating wider adoption of green building concepts by working closely with stakeholders in advancing the green building movement in the country.
The Green Building movement in India has been advancing at a rapid pace and transforming India, into one of the global leaders in green built environment, the release added.
