Charlotte Rampling ropes in a role in Vatican-thriller 'Santo Subito!'

Rome, Mar 3 (UNI) Veteran British actor Charlotte Rampling has boarded the cast of "Santo Subito!", a Vatican-set thriller headlined by Mark Ruffalo and directed by French auteur Bertrand Bonello.
Production is now in full swing in Rome, launching a ten-week shoot that will extend to Matera in Italy and to Warsaw and Szczawnica in Poland, reports VARIETY.
The film explores the canonisation process of Pope John Paul II, Rampling will play Polish-born American philosopher Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka, who had a long intellectual friendship with the Polish pontiff, with whom she exchanged intimate letters.
Ruffalo plays Father Joseph Murolo, an American-born priest summoned by the Vatican to serve as the “devil’s advocate” in the investigation of Pope John Paul II’s life and potential path to sainthood.
The ensemble boasts a formidable cast, including Poland’s Andrzej Chyra as Pope John Paul II; Cezary Żak as Stanisław Dziwisz, the pontiff’s personal secretary and close collaborator; Marisa Borini as Sofia Murolo, who is Joseph’s mother; France’s Adam Bessa as Ali Agça, who attempted to assassinate the Pope; and Anton Lesser as Father Matthew, who is Joseph’s friend.
Co-written by Thomas Bidegain, known for his Oscar-nominated work on Emilia Perez, the film is conceived as a tense exploration of faith, doubt and institutional power. Behind the camera, Bon reunites with cinematographer Josée Deshaies, while production design and costume artistry are overseen by Dimitri Capuani and Edoardo Russo, respectively.
European banner Vuelta is financing the project, with Playtime overseeing international sales. The film will be released in Italy by PiperFilm. UNI NST SSP
