Australia-India Partnership advances Green Steel with world-first use of agricultural waste

Canberra, Mar 10 (UNI) A world-first trial in India has demonstrated that agricultural waste can be used to cut emissions from steelmaking, marking a major step toward green steel.
Researchers from Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) successfully replaced a portion of coal with rice husk pellets at commercial scale, proving the approach can work in one of the fastest-growing steel industries in the world.
Notably, steelmaking is a sector responsible for around one-tenth of global carbon emissions. It is worth mentioning that India’s steel sector emits 2.55 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of steel, significantly higher than the global average of 1.8 tonnes. Poor air quality, heavily influenced by in-field burning of crop residues, contributes to over 30,000 deaths annually in the country, making it a critical public health concern.
