ZSI discovers two new spider species, revives century-old study on ‘Vinegaroons’

Siliguri, May 13 (UNI) India’s hidden world of spiders and whip scorpions has come into fresh scientific focus after researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered two new spider species in Nagaland and revived scientific studies on the country’s little-known whip scorpions after more than a century.
According to a media release issued by the Press Information Bureau, the findings have been published in the international journal Zootaxa and are being seen as a significant contribution to India’s biodiversity research.
The newly discovered spider species belong to the genus “Psechrus,” a group known for building large sheet-like webs in moist forest areas. The two species have been named Psechrus ntu and Psechrus phenshunyu after villages in Nagaland where they were found.
