Women secure Mayor posts in Solapur local bodies

Solapur, Oct 7 (UNI) The long-delayed election process for local self-government bodies in Solapur district has gained fresh momentum after a gap of nearly seven years, following the draw of reservations for municipal councils and nagar panchayats. The results have led to women securing mayoral posts in several local bodies, marking a significant step forward under the Mahila raj initiative and prompting established political leaders to consider contesting from the newly reserved constituencies.
In Akluj, a traditional stronghold of the Mohite-Patil group, the mayoral post has been reserved for women from the Scheduled Caste category, marking the first such election since the gram panchayat’s conversion into a municipal council. Similarly, the mayoral posts in Mohol and Maindargi have also been reserved for Scheduled Caste women, while in Kurduwadi, the position has been allotted to women from the backward category.
In Sangola, the municipality has been designated for both the backward and general categories, reflecting a wider representation pattern. For A. Samadhan Awtade, the mayoral post in Mangalvedha, reserved for women from the general category, carries political importance. Likewise, former MLA Prashant Paricharak finds significance in the Pandharpur Municipality, where the mayoral post has been reserved for general category women, alongside similar reservations for Karmala and Barshi.
