Mumbai, Sep 22 (UNI) Setting the stage for political mobilisation, the Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for biennial elections to five Legislative Council seats across Maharashtra.
The electoral contest will cover key regional divisions, including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Pune, Nagpur and Amravati.
The polls come at a time when parts of the state are facing administrative challenges related to drought and water scarcity, adding another layer to the political contest between the ruling alliance and the opposition. The Election Commission has announced a wider cycle of Legislative Council elections across four states.
Uttar Pradesh will have elections for 11 seats-five Graduates' and six Teachers' constituencies-while Bihar will see polls for eight seats, comprising four Graduates' and four Teachers' constituencies. Maharashtra will have elections for five seats-three Graduates' and two Teachers' constituencies-and Karnataka will have elections for four seats, comprising two Graduates' and two Teachers' constituencies. The impending conclusion of terms for five high-profile MLCs has opened up key vacancies and is likely to trigger rigorous competition among political parties for nominations.
The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) Graduates' Constituency is currently represented by Satish Chavan, whose term is drawing to a close. The Pune Graduates' Constituency is represented by Arun Lad, whose tenure is coming to an end, while the Nagpur Graduates' Constituency is held by Abhijit Wanjarri,. The Amravati Teachers' Constituency is currently represented by Kiran Sarnaik, while the Pune Teachers' Constituency is held by Jayant Asgaonkar.
