Vientiane: Poisonous mushrooms kill 6 in northern Laos

Vientiane, May 15 (UNI) Health authorities in northern Laos' Xayaboury province have issued a warning about poisonous wild mushrooms after six deaths were reported, urging the public to stay vigilant and take preventive measures to avoid further fatalities.
According to a warning issued by the provincial health office on Tuesday, poisonous mushrooms have killed six people and sickened two others in the province since January 2025.

Victims experienced symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea shortly after consuming wild mushrooms, the local news website Lao Phattana News reported on Thursday.
The provincial health office has called on local authorities to coordinate closely with health workers to monitor, collect, and promptly report mushroom poisoning cases to relevant agencies.
In addition, they are urged to lead public health education efforts, raising awareness about the dangers of consuming wild or unidentified mushrooms and other toxic foods.
Parents are advised to exercise caution when preparing meals, ensuring that all ingredients are safe for consumption.
The public is strongly warned to remain vigilant to help prevent further cases of mushroom poisoning.
