Uttarakhand SC-ST teachers oppose Bhagavad Gita teaching in schools

Dehradun, July 16 (UNI) A day after schools in Uttarakhand began teaching verses of Bhagvad Gita to the students, the Government SC-ST Teacher's Association in the state today opposed it describing the step as "anti-constitution".
The association said Bhagvad Gita teachings being a religious text, its teachings cannot be taught in schools being funded by the state government because such teachings are against the principle of secularism.
Opposing the teaching of verses from the Bhagavad Gita in schools, the Uttarakhand Government SC/ST Teachers' Association has written to the school education director asking for withdrawal of the directorate order issued earlier in this regard.
