US cannot withdraw from NATO unilaterally, but can still hurt it amid Trump's increasing criticism of the alliance

Washington, April 10 (UNI) While President Donald Trump cannot formally withdraw the US from NATO on his own, he can still dent its relationship with the US, as he has already done so with his increasingly sharp criticism of the bloc, heavily straining Washington's relations with its long-time allies.
However, qithdrawal from NATO would require both a formal Congressional concession, as well as a one-year prior notification to the alliance under existing legislation,
Already under great tension due to the Russia–Ukraine war, the problems have intensified manifold amid the Iran war, with the US publicly lambasting many of its allies, calling them "weak", and the NATO "a paper tiger" without US aid, due to the refusal of European members to participate in direct military operations, or help in opening the Strait of Hormuz.
