US, allies urge UN action over alleged North Korea sanctions violations at sea

Washington/Tokyo, May 30 (UNI) The United States and a group of allied countries called for stronger United Nations action against alleged North Korean sanctions evasion at sea, urging the UN Security Council to move against vessels accused of facilitating prohibited exports.
In a joint statement, the governments of the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and the United Kingdom, along with the European External Action Service (EEAS), said there was “clear evidence” of violations involving maritime shipments of North Korean coal and iron ore, which are banned under UN sanctions.
The joint statement called upon the North Korea Sanctions Committee (the 1718 Committee), to examine information regarding violations and take appropriate measures with respect to the five vessels identified as having been involved in clear violations of obligations under UN Security Council resolutions prohibiting the export of North Korean coal and iron ore, as well as the seven vessels that were nominated to the 1718 Committee in December 2025 for designation pursuant to UN Security Council resolution 2321 and remain under consideration.
