UP: 3 get capital punishment in 44-yr-old Dalit massacre case

Mainpuri (UP), Mar 18 (UNI) Three persons were awarded capital punishment along with a fine of Rs 50,000 each by a local court here in Mainpuri on Tuesday in almost 44-year-old case related to massacre of Dalit in a village in Firozabad district, prosecution sources said here.
Prosecution sources said that in 1981, members of Radhey-Santosha gang killed 24 Dalits in Dihuli village in Mainpuri district at that time. "On the evening of November 18, 1981, the Radhey-Santosha gang unleashed a reign of death in Dihuli village killing 24 people and injuring. The incident shook the Indira Gandhi government at the centre and forced VP Singh, who was the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh to resign from the post," they said.
Prosecution sources said that on November 22, 1981, the then PM Indira Gandhi came to Dihuli village and talked to the kin of the victims. "The Radhe-Santosha gang, which carried out the Dihuli massacre, killed 24 Dalits only because the police had made them witnesses in an encounter. Later, the police filed a charge sheet in the case in the year 1993," they said.
