UN expresses concern over Bangladesh quota protests

United Nations, July 17 (UNI) Expressing concern over violence targeted at protestors opposing the quota system for recruitment in the Bangladesh civil services, the United Nations (UN) has iterated that people have a right to demonstrate peacefully and urged the country's government to protect the demnstrators.
While addressing a daily press briefing on Tuesday, UN Spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, said the UN was aware of the situation, and was following it "closely and with concern".
"I think whether it’s in Bangladesh or anywhere else in the world, people have a right to demonstrate peacefully, and we call on the Government of Bangladesh to protect the demonstrators against any form of threat or violence," Dujarric said.
